Whatever I am cooking for shabbos - schnitzel with orzo, meatballs with rice or orzo, spaghetti with meat, etc. My kids are always hungry for a meal after school!

Wow, I'm shocked reading this. Kids eat something after school and then later chulant and kugel? How much shabbos food do make? When Friday night is really do they eat again?

Not the only one!
My kids have to do with sandwiches, yoghurt or cereal until we have the meal together (at least this time a year. In the summer we do it a bit differently.) Sometimes, rarely though, but sometimes if I've been baking I offer them a challah roll each and it's a real treat as they know challah is usually for Shabbos only.

I guess it depends what time your kids come home. My kids come home at 12, eat lunch then, and by 4 are reasonably hungry again.

I was raised that shabbat food is for shabbat. It should be special at the meals, not lunch's leftovers. My kids got pasta or cereal or leftover pizza from Thurs. night- I usually ordered extra so there would be some for lunch on Friday

In the summer my kids would have regular lunch and then chicken soup with all the fixings before shabbat. They usually went to sleep after kiddush and challah anyway back in the day

There's also a mitzvah to try your shabbos food beforehand so I usually mix lunch in with that

Same here.

In the winter it's pasta, pizza, or sandwiches or maybe something frozen like blintzes or fish sticks.
Even when Licht is very early at 4:15, my husband doesn't get home from shul until 5:30/5:45 so they're plenty hungry.

In the summer, we eat sandwiches when they come home from school.
I have kugel, chicken, chicken nuggets at 5. My teens eat it as a snack and are fine eating the meal at 9.
My younger ones, the kugel and chicken serves as the meal and they usually go to sleep after Kiddush, challa, and some salad.

We are very makpid not to wash after the 9th hour though. In the winter, that's like 1:30.
