This is a real illness that exists in some families.
Dh’s father was not in his life for most of his childhood. He would visit sporadically and send post cards. Dh put himself through college and his MBA program. All during this his father bounced from job to job, taking money from his own elderly parents, moving like every year.When his grandmother died, she left dh’s father a small fortune and he proceeded to blow through that quickly. During a semi annual phone call, he told dh he might just show up at our house one day to be taken in. He was half joking and half serious. He holds no accountability to his actions and it’s incredibly sad.
