I just got an invantation with the name Tema spelled TES MEM HEY. The real spelling is TES EIEN MEM ALEF as it is a yiddish name and never finishes with a HEY. I was thinkig of giving her a ring to make sure they have the correct spelling FOR THE KESUBAH as it could occur shalyous later. did anybody heard it spelled this way YES MEM HEY ??

a person can spell their name any way they wish ... and if that is their spelling their entire life that is what becomes proper on their Kesubah ...

I agree with greenfire. If it bothers you so much you can casually say something like "oh, that's an interesting spelling, I thought it's usualy spelled xyz.
I've never heard of the name, interesting, though it reminds me of the gemore

Rachel no no, TEMA is a yiddish name like Charna Yenta Zlata etc etc. there imagrated from eourpean circles. In chssidic and some litvish circles u can fint tons of funny sounding names!!

Greenfire there are tons of poskim on this subgect. Lots hold when u give a name after someone the correct spelling is what most people write even if u like it anotherway and it only matters at a kesubah get and chlitzah. Some mesudar kedushins even check the witnesses names spelling. Once a chupah got delayed almost ahour cuse of this.

Ruchel Lots of names we dont know the meanings. In chassidic/litvish circles u just give it after some grandparent etc. that had that name.

Then how do we know it's not from Tamar? My grandfather (chassidish born) says it is.

Ruchel yiddish names werent created to translate bibical ones. ther aint any translanted yiddish names. just in gulas back them yidden were always in hidding and bibbical names could give them away. all these names are old hungiarian polish russian names slighth mized with yiddish. In isrel after world war the zionist changed all to hebrew so u were Tema=Tamar they found someting similar. Yenta=Yaffa, Yenta in yiddish is used for a big [gossip] talker. the opposte of Yaffa!! 8)

Hello Kitty - There are lots of names that the average person might not know the meaning of but they still have meanings. Also, Ruchel happens to be very knowledgeable in names so if she says that Tema is the Yiddish version of Tamar, I would be inclined to believe her.

Ok, I'll try to be clearer.

Modern Hebrew names like Zahava came after Yiddish.
Biblical Hebrew names came before their Yiddish translations (Aryeh Leib, Zvi Hirsch, Pnina Perla, Tsipora Feiga, etc).

No name has no meaning. It's not human nature.

Zlata is "gold", from Slavic/Polish zloty
Yenta is "noble", from (old)French Gentille
Charna is "dark", from Slavic chern, think Chernobyl
