My oldest just started high school in an oot but fairly yeshivish BY. She came home today telling us she's learning how to lein eicha and wanting to practice. It's nice and all but is this normal for BY? I figure there's more practical things they can learn. Or even another English class. This just seems a little weird and out of left field hashkafically. Anyone else's by do this? Or don't?

I never, ever heard of that in 20 years of teaching and with a bunch of girls in school. It's also strange considering the time of year?

Funny. In seminary our Shir Ha’shirim teacher promised us that if we all passed the test she’d teach us to “lein.” I thought it was strange then and I think it’s strange now.

We didn't learn eicha in highschool but we did learn two other megillos, and never to lein. Strange.

I have never really heard of BY women leining, but in MO circles it's fairly common for women to lein megillos -- there's certainly no halachic problem with it, especially if she doesn't plan on reciting it in front of any men.
