I get thinner but warm coats, and unzip in the car. Do seatbelt over open coat. Can even zup coat up over the seat belt if very cold.
Another option is coat over a warm sweater, when get into the car take off coat, they can use it as a blanket until car warms up.
Another option: remover coat to buckel then out it back on backwards over the buckel

A thin down jacket sounds like it will keep the child warm outside for a few minutes but not overheat in the car.
For a couple of minutes at a time having feet uncovered (no skin showing) should be ok for kid to handle in regular winter non frigid weather. We don t cover our legs either.

They don’t retract in a crash, they just lock, same as car seat harnesses, so it presents the same compression concerns. Another concern is that the belt can slip around more easily over the bulk of the coat, potentially risking soft tissue or neck damage, ADAC did tests which you can see videos of online, apparently the dummies would have experienced significant organ damage from the lap belt even at low speeds.

I really liked a lands end coat - warm and thin - but I don’t know the name.
But it’s for 2+.
I totally hear the problem op.
None of the solutions ever seemed to work.
