I never knew there’s a difference in price. I think they’re the same price in bingo.

It's the same orice, but with one you're just paying for grape juice and the other grape juice plus water. So you're paying the same price but getting less grape juice.

Exactly. They're the same price when the lite has water mixed in ..in other words when you buy regular you're paying $5 for 64 oz of grape juice. When you buy lite you're paying $5 for 32 oz grape juice, 32 oz water. You're paying them to add water

Is it the same thing with red milk vs blue milk? (Not 50% less, I don't think, but is it just watered down red milk?)

good point. this shuts down the "different grapes" talk.

It can be the same fruit and still taste different. Think about the fruit you buy, the flavor isn’t 100% consistent it’s varies in sweetness of how strong or tart the flavor is from batch to batch.

No there’s no water. They just remove more fat

You’re not paying extra for water. They use different grapes for each. Diluted regular grape juice doesn’t taste remotely like the kedem light.

It says water in the ingredients.

we've always bought the light kedem grape juice. husband doesn't want the extra calories of the regular with all the cups necessary for kiddush and havdallah especially over yom tovs too.

someone told us we're wasting money buying the light stuff and just to buy the regular stuff and dilute it down with water. I've been making a 50/50 batch. the light stuff has a chemical taste that's kind of gross, and the diluted version of the regular juice tastes weaker but doesn't have a chemical taste.

anyone else do this?

The light grape juice has Splenda too. It's not just watered down.

where is my math wrong? why isn't the dilution ratio equal to the ratio of the calories and sugar?

Because their regular grape juice has lots and lots of grape syrup added. They cook down grapes and make a super sugary sweet natural concentrate, but very high in grams of sugar and calories, which they add to each batch of grape juice. This is their hack for getting every bottle of grape juice to taste the same and uniform. It also allows them to call it 100% juice.

Their light grape juice version uses half the amount of syrup in their squeezed grape juice, and Splenda added to make up for the lack of sweetness.

interesting. but then is the low calorie one also from the same concentrate / syrup? if so, how do they make it?

They add less than half the amount of syrup to the same base of squeezed grape juice, and fill in with Splenda.

ugh you guys...I don't like eating artificial sweeteners. but the reg grape juice is way too sweet. and the light is so much better than diluting on our own. iirc the light was an acquired taste we had to get used to when we switched from reg. do you think we can get used to watered down reg too? Crying

We use white grape juice to cut down on the heavy sweetness without it being diluted.

My Rav, when speaking before pesach said that it’s halachically better to use light grape juice over watered down regular. He said they’re different

Regular purple (concord) has the most calories. The lighter you go, the less calories and sugar. For regular grape juice. I think you can dilute regular to be 1/3 grape juice, 1/3 water, 1/3 wine like on Pesach. And you don’t need to drink so much on Shabbos. Also please ask a shayla about using concentrate for kiddush. I think some don’t hold by it. It has to be majority real grape juice, fresh.

why would you add wine to grape juice if you want fewer calories and sugar? huh?

ive seen all sorts of rabbis use kedem regular grape juice for kiddush, which is from concentrate. I dont think I need to ask about things that are totally obvious.

Nope, you can’t just add 50% water for kiddush.
Ask your LOR.
It isn’t just watered down in the light version.
They add stuff to the regular version, and different stuff to the light.

Again ask your LOR. But for kiddush it’s an issue.

And as rumor goes, Kedem a
Ready puts in almost as much water as is allowed halachically!

It can only be a certain amount concentrate. That’s why it’s very important to say כשר לקידוש ולארבע כוסות. If it doesn’t say that you should ask. Wegmans sparkling grape juice was kosher but not for kiddush. It had a hechsher and I called them and they told me it’s kosher to drink but not for kiddish.

Did you find out what Bracha you should make on it?
