I’ve always had a passion for wigs and have been dreaming of starting my own wig business. I’ve been saving money now for a bit in order to open a wig salon.
I know this business is very crowded to begin with do you think starting a salon now is smart since there are so many.

- what’s ur ideal location?
- why’s gonna draw people to you?
To be a one man show in ur house there’s virtually zero overhead day to day
Overhead is say Brookhaven is 12,000 a month. You’d probably sink pretty quickly ..

Great!! So I’m currently centrally located in Passaic. I have an extra bedroom that I can use. I think what might draw people to me is that I’m young but still experienced. I understand color really well. Along with how to make your wig look and maintain well. I have redone my wig myself by installing baby hairs and coloring and I’ve gotten many many compliments on it. In general I think that I have a fresh new look to wigs and I think that many people would appreciate that!

If you want to open in Passaic, you need to be smart about it. Don’t operate it like a heimishe business. Be professional. Have normal hours. Then I’d use you.

Just go in knowing ur business model..
have a good plan in place, I’ve done this so I’m speaking from first hand experience.
If you need to earn x dollars monthly and you don’t think you’ll be able to bring that in in the beginning then maybe keep a part time job, maybe a work from home job or a job with flexible hours. Having night appts is a huge benefit. Start by undercutting the market and charging slightly less than the people around you. No need to pay for advertising, use the bubble and WhatsApp groups to help get word out. Ultimately word of mouth will be your best friend.
Also you mention doing babyhair and color. Do u you to also start out doing repairs? Keep in mind if you’re not experienced with color you may be getting yourself into hot water as wigs can be super unpredictable. Same with repairs. Consider taking a course if you want to do net repairs/ take ins. Those can be finicky.
Lastly - do you cut or want to sell? If yes you’d be best off working for someone else first who sells a lot, I got my best selling experience working for a top notch sheitel macher …

Nope! And thankfully so! Over the last few years over 1 dz companies have tried to start up and failed.
When you think of the sheer number of wigs a company need to own to be successful it can blow your mind. Sary and Irene as great examples. The have skin top, ribbon front, lace front, lace tops, newer lines (level, Rina) hand sewn wigs also avail in skin,ribbon and lace.
Now each of these types of wigs have to be avail in ALL lengthsand ALL colors. AND!! Then you need to be able to supply a few hundred (or more!!) sheitel machers with enough stock!
The amount of money you need behind u to truly make a business like this successful is way way more than u think!
