We’ve already blown it in our schools, but honestly I’m so saddened that our precious batei mikdash meat have also become places for one-upmanship and judgement for those who can’t play the game, whether for financial reasons or just because they’re not buying into to the ultimate chitzoniyus.
Is nothing sacred anymore?
How about we just focus on our tefilos?
Ready, aim, fire. |
But sometimes a bag is just a bag.

I have never seen or heard of such a thing...I always brought a daiper bag or doona bag.
My kids are a bit bigger now but I would still pack a few things in my zippered tote bag..a paper bag would rip or get wet.

I like that they're shaped - my tehillim, machzor waterbottle stand "straight" and it doesn't make crinkly noises when you take something out of it.
But now everyone brings from the Jewish stores that have the reusable bags... not necessaraly Hermes, Prada etc... |
This thread is really interesting to me. I've never seen these designer bags in shul or really anywhere else... but this past RH, the young women next to me came back home from out of town where she moved when she recently got married, and her shul bag was a harder paper shopping bag from a frum store, and it was so loud when she picked it up and opened it, everyone turned around to see what made the sound.
I use a canvas tote bag from trader joes or barnes and noble, whichever is empty at the time.
Why don't people just use a canvas bag? Is it to show off that you have designer? What is the reason for davka a designer paper bag and not a canvas tote?

I have a few small fabric bags that I use. I once had a velvet bag with a should strap that had Shabbat Kodesh embroidered on it but it seems to have disappeared.

I have bags from Bar Mitzvahs (either that say שבת or have the bar mitzvah boys logo) or I use a small Junee’s bag, Project Ezra MM bag, FC bag or something of that texture- whatever is convenient. They are lulu lemon style, but I am not a middle school girl with Friday lunch. I like the plasticized texture and need it to fit my heels, but have no interest in being pretentious. A plastic T shopping bag (like from Bingo) is to noisy, big, and the wrong shape, designer paper bags are not shaped the same and feel pretentious to me.

I don't know of hard paper bags that make noise, they're already structured, not sure which one that lady had.
But yes, the "trend" now ( at least in my shul) is more the canvas bags from the jewish woman's clothing stores. They didn't have those "back in the days"
