If you need to bring some tissues, a snack fora toddler, your machzor to have next to you in shul?
Do you use an actual bag? How fancy is it?
It‘s been a lot of shul time and in my community, somehow it has become the done thing to use a shopping bag from a designer store. But not the actual designer bag. Like, if I own a Coach bag, I would bring the Coach store paper bag for shul. But not the Coach bag itself. And then it’s a parade of different paper bags that one happens to own.
I find it peculiar and wonder how it is in other places?

Diaper bag if I’m going with a baby and a decent shopping bag if not. Let’s please not start a new “need”!

I know people that only use bags for shul from very fancy stores, but I use a regular shopping bag.

The designer store bags tend to be very thick and sturdy that’s probably why

I tried to go to a nice Jewish store before Yom Tov to get a decent bag.
Of course I also go to buy things but I have that in mind too. And then I save the bag so I have it.
Tell me it's unnecessary but I've been socially off for long enough that I want to do what's normal. People in real life are a lot more judgmental about fashion things than the ladies here.

Yeah I’ve seen it in Shul and as a teen I actually only used designer paper bags
Now I don’t go much but if I do it’s usually a diaper bag for the baby and a little knapsack for the toddler.

I went to a specific store before yom tov partly because I wanted their bag. I spent nice money there & one item happened to be on sale. Instead of giving me their regular nice bag, they gave me a plain brown paper bag that had in big SALE printed on it. I was quite disappointed.....

Wow it‘s very validating! I do own paper bags and don’t throw them out but never thought of keeping them specifically for shul until this year when I scratched my head whether I take a sturdy paper bag from a „better“ store or an actual bag I had bought in that „better“ store. But hardly anyone come to shul with a proper bag unless it’s a diaper bag. Everyone is with a paper bag.

When I go to shul it’s with a stroller so I put things in my stroller and take out when necessary. In terms of the paper bag thing, I think it’s silly for it to be a pressure/showing off the ‘brand name’ store you went to, but I do hear how it somehow looks nicer and more presentable for YT/shul. Vs my crumpled plastic bag from the grocery store that makes a noise every time I move it and just doesn’t have that same look.

I have a million designer shopping bags and I use them all the time for everything and everywhere because they’re sturdy and hold up
I’m probably being judged for it but I don’t care

Small cloth tote bag or good quality, sturdy shopping bag (the latter tend to come from more upscale stores).

I know, sounds ridiculous right?
But seeing is believing. Come to my town. You'll see what I mean.
Happens to be. I wouldn't say very fancy stores. I'd say reasonable stores or any Jewish store. Designer stuff isn't such a thing here, but you don't come with a grocery bag.

Tbh I probably would never notice. Maybe now I will after this thread.

I specifically don't take a real handbag to shul because then it looks weekday and has a maras ayin look of someone on a regular weekday. I try to find a small sturdy decent looking shopping bag from my basket of bags. (I do the same thing when I need to bring a bag to a wedding. I don't want to walk in with a weekday looking bag, together with my evening bag, but I might need a bag to take with me and leave in the ladies room if I traveled in for the wedding).

I don't have fancy bags. I use diaper bag on carriage. Never ever took anything to shul for child above carriage age.

So weird. I never heard of this concept of paper bags being used. Are people in their 20s 30s doing this as well? I’m not judgmental but I wouldn’t do anything less than a canvas/tote. Even sturdy paper bags can break if you put heavy stuff inside or get creases etc

I have done this for years, now I try to not to because I’ve gotten comments. I do actually save all my real real designer bags because that adds to the value of my product, for example, Louis Vuitton bag and box adds value to my Louis Vuitton bag. My Gucci bag and box adds value to my Gucci shoes, etc. but I’d never bring those bags to shul.
But while I do sometimes grab a ladida or little loungers bag when going to shul etc, I will also just as easily grab a Walmart bag from our Walmart plus deliveries because honestly we have 100 of those (I throw them out and they just just come faster, it’s crazy)

How does it add value?

This is an old trend. I grew up going to an OOT shul with mostly very wealthy congregants and yom tov was full of LV, Prada, Gucci etc shopping bags.
