I once emailed Mostly Music for an explanation but I never heard back. (should be a spinoff - why do frum businesses not respond to emails? Obviously not all, but I find it to be a pattern.)
Some video rentals on their site are as much as $60 for rentals - for that exorbitant price I feel like you should get to own it! The chol hamoed public showings get increasingly expensive each season- and there they need to pay overhead- auditorium rental, screen, staff... But here I'm talking about video streaming that I'm watching in my own home. It should definitely be significantly less than a public showing with overhead.
I sometimes pay the $30, 40 price they ask for rentals as a treat for my girls because I feel like I don't have an alternative, but I think it's a rip-off. Yes, I know that the price is for up to 5 people, but I usually just rent it for 1 and rarely 2 dds.

Really? It's economics. They're not Netflix. The budget is bigger and audience is smaller.

Because they can.
Their expenses are higher.. But still that's very expensive.

Movie productions are very expensive. In the non Jewish world they show them in theaters where they make all the money. They also have huge companies pay for ads that cover expenses. How should the frum places cover the expenses?

You all seem to be missing the point. Are you even reading the op? I never asked why they can't charge the same price as Amazon charges for their digital videos.
My question is why they're charging more than they charge for the chol hamoed public showings, or at least if they need to charge that price, why can't it be mine forever instead of a 24 or 72 hour rental.

Because that’s how they make money, you needing to pay for it each time you want to watch it. And the prices are based on how much money they need to make, so some can be cheaper and others can’t be.

I dont know what youre talking about. The jewish movies I see are $20 to $50 and are yours to keep. These are "older" films though.
Are you talking "new releases" that they're showing to.audiences still or pretty recently? Of course they do it this way with a high charge to "rent"- they assume youre showing thay to multiple people who would otherwise buy tickets.....they really want you to buy tickets.
Eta, I dont know anything about mostly music. These are the ones for sale in the bookstores and supermarkets.

On chol hamoed my kids do go to the public showings. I mean when they want to watch during vacation days such as Chanukah or midwinter vacation. They're not doing public showings then.

I don't do rentals. Either we buy or we don't. Same with music subscription services.
Btw, before Yom tov I contacted MM a question and they responded the next day. If you want to start a spin off, I'll vent about medical places that rarely respond to emails/online communication. (Some do, yes, but many others have welcoming website but never respond).

I agree the prices are insane. I'm sitting vegging on my computer and thought better to watch a Jewish video. but $50 for myself? that's 2 or 3 packages of meat! I can't treat myself. I've done the cheaper ones in the past. again, if it was to keep, I would consider it better. or $20 or less. the older ones are cheaper.
maybe you can buy a DVD or USB in store for the same price? but I doubt they have all the options. I don't blame them. these are high quality films and small audiences. but still wish there was a solution. like keeping it. cuz I'm likely not renting it 2x anyway.

The bolded! Agree! I wouldn't rent the same movie twice

OP, you're right, there's been a huge jump on the prices and many of the new ones are only available for rental. Some also limit the viewers which is really problematic. We rented an old video from Niggun begause MM didn't have the rental option.
BTW, I actually emailed MM to ask them about 3 day rentals with Yom Tov overlapping and they replied right away they said you can email them and they'll extend the rental.

Does on-line give a few sentences on what is in the film?
I find the Chol-Moid ads don't give any info what you are seeing, that bothers me if I would pay a lot of money to see something at lest tell me what it's about.

Some can only be rented. And some are $8 to rent and $25 to buy...
