My zeidy A’h used to let down his beard from Shabbos Selichos through Shabbos bereishis. It adds to the atmosphere.

I dont understand what you dont get... people take on different things during this time. Some try not to speak loshon hara, some try to daven 3 times a day- you get my point. We are not trying to "trick" anyone.....

Think of it like this:

When you have guests in your house, (hopefully) your household and its inhabitants are on their best behavior. Is your family like that all the time? No, but when you have guests, everybody really tries to well behaved.

Hashem is very close to us at this time of the year. (ani ledodi v'dodi li). We try to be on our best behavior, even if it's not our usual behavior.

I didn't know people do that (the cholov yisroel thing) I know people that keep it at home but don't if they're out but I also thought it was either you keep it or you don't

I don't have the source now, but I have read several times (in halachic sources) that it is a good idea for a person who usually eats pas palter to only eat pas yisroel during Elul and the Aseres Yemai Teshuvah. So I think this is something with a strong history. Doing chalav yisroel during this time is similar, I think.

I just googled and it seems this is mentioned in both the Shulchan Aruch and the Mishnah Berurah.

no it's not it is one and the same ... I don't comprehend it ... I have the stuff in my house anyways because my sonny boy only eats cholov yisroel and pas yisroel ... it's the stress of arguing why it's okay to be different for only 10 days ...

so I'll be good now ... after yom kippur I'll run amok and ________________________ (ooh good one) and I'll be good again next rosh hashana ...

It's the beginning of the year. The way you start off affects your entire year, like having a bad or good morning can affect your entire day. At least that's my reason for trying things now that I won't necessarily be keeping later.

583. During the year it is permitted for one to eat "Pas Palter" (kosher bread or other items baked by a non-jew commercially) although one may generally not eat "Pas Akum" (kosher bread baked by a non-jew for personal consumption) anytime because Chazal sought to limit social interaction with non-jews. Shulchan Aruch YD 112 Rama 2, Halacha Berurah Vol.6, Iss. 3

584. However, during the Aseres Yemei Tshuvah, {from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur} one should be stringent, and not eat "Pas Palter" (kosher bread or other items baked by a non-jew) at all. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 603:1

[Note: Nowadays there are some who have taken upon themselves the Chumra (stringency) to avoid eating "Pas Palter" anytime.]

Greenie, in all seriousness, is this something you want to FIGHT with your kids about? Is there not enough between you and them? Let this go- maybe even praise her for initiating something positive!

Since you have it in the house anyway, why does it really bother you if she does it, even if it doesn't make sense to you? And maybe, maybe she'll even decided to continue it afterwards. Would that bother you very much?

hello ... I don't care if she does it ... I care about why in general people do it and we simply didn't agree with each other ... here too - I hear what you say - but still don't get it ... more like a frustration than a stress fest ... comprende ...

Greenfire, I agree with you 100%. I feel that if somebody thinks it's not okay to eat chalav stam, they never should. Or at least decide to try to always eat chalav yisrael and if it's too hard, too bad. I think if you are doing it with the intention of going back to OUD after Yom Kippur, then who are you fooling??
That said, if your daughter is trying to better herself (at least in her opinion...I need my Hershey's and Entenmann's cakes) then why argue with her? She means well and chances are she was brainwashed into it...

You mentioned arguing and being stressed out. It's so not worth it. Might be a good philosophical question, but don't make it an issue with her.

I always tell it to DH when he makes an issue of something small my kids do. Like if my son doesn't want to wear a shluf yarmulka and DH is making him... I just tell him to let it go and save it for something big.

There are even people who eat kosher meat during Pessach only... I've stopped wondering. To me, either you do (keep kosher, or keep further stuff like CY) or you don't.

I think it's really great that people want to take on something extra during Aseres Yemei Teshuva. I'm impressed. I wish I were on that level.

And for those who think it's hypocritical - When I'm tempted to talk LH now I shouldn't bother holding back, right? Cause I know that I WILL be talking LH at other times, right? So why bother?
