My 19 month old DS got stitches yesterday on his forehead, and the doctor covered it with tape and gave us a few more pieces of tape to replace it with in case it comes off, like from bathing. The issue is my son pulled off the tape, and every piece I replaced it with. I tried a different roll of paper tape I had in the house, tried covering the tape with the bandaid, and tried a stronger stickier tape but he pulled them all off. I’m afraid he will break the stitches from pulling off the tape, and also as soon as he gets the tape off he right away tries touching the stitches. I’m afraid he will rip them out or something (although hopefully the pain of doing so would keep him from ripping them out).

Any creative suggestions of how I can keep his cut covered?

Thanks!

Maybe an ace bandage to hold tapes place tell him it’s part of a pirate costume make him want to wear it

Just leave it open. After 48 hours the initial healing should have taken place, and the risk of infection is low. If you ignore it, he'll probably forget about them.

If he keeps touching, there can be scarring. My son kept touching stitches and I'm sure it would've looked nicer today had he not touched it.

He might be touching it because he's feeling it. Either hurting or bothering him. Maybe he needs a little motrin to take pain away so he forgets about it.

Don't really know what to put on instead of the tape. I know that was your question.... Hope someone has a creative idea.

Thank you, and thanks also to the others who replied.

He mostly forgot about it over Yom Kipur, only tried to take it off a few times.
If I recall you’re a nurse, so hopefully I can trust what you say. If he goes back to pulling it I’ll take it off.

Had this a few months ago, baby same age. Left it uncovered. Bh it’s healing beautifully, minimal scaring

I'm just adding that if there is no bandage, you need to make sure that it stays clean. Normally on the forehead this shouldn't be a problem, but toddlers are talented in this area... If you see it's dirty, apply soap and water!
