Wait! And they’re all black. There is nothing like wearing long black polyester frocks that don’t fit well and make you sweat buckets. Oh, and are completely overpriced in this free market world. Yay us.

The stores are actually full of colored & printed robes, absolutely not all black.

I'm so glad to see this post because I have a question. Forgive my ignorance, but I see "Shabbos robe" mentioned all the time here, and I have no idea what it means! I'm a BT, I don't know all the lingo. So, what's a Shabbos robe? When I hear the word "robe" I think of a bathrobe. But it sounds like you're talking about a dress?

Thanks for explaining! I guess my next question (for anyone) is, aren't these just dresses? Couldn't one just .. wear a dress on Shabbos? Why does it need to be designated a robe?

And just think about how cheaply they were produced in China. Probably not more than $20 a piece Banging head

It’s less than 20. More like $5. Polyester is literally made from plastic. The leggings are also less.

There's something different about a Shabbos robe. It's usually very long, maybe even floor length, even when long is not in style for other formal clothing. It's more casual- you wouldn't wear a Shabbos robe to an event, and many people won't wear a Shabbos robe to shul. It's considered elegant lounge wear, to wear around the house or in the neighborhood, on Shabbos and YomTov only. So it may look like a dress to you but it would never be worn where you would ordinarily wear other dresses.

They’ve changed in the last few years to be a little more maxi-dress like but the original “robe” style is basically a house coat but make it ✨fashion✨. They were typically velour, column gowns with fancy embellishments, but also zip or button up. The goal is flattering, won’t crush the challah belly, a little sparkle, comfy enough that you can fall asleep on the couch in it, and an easy way out (either for for nursing or so you don’t destroy the 12 layers of makeup you just put on for the morning).

I remember shopping in Fox's in Brooklyn years ago and I found a beautiful long ombre pink dress with a beaded waist, very flowy, and I brought it over to my mother who was in middle of paying the cashier and asked her if she thought it could work as a robe and the cashier got a really confused look on his face and was like, "... a robe?" And I was like "No, no, never mind!" and got it and wore it as a Shabbos robe for the next two summers LOL

OP I agree with every word.
After years of buying random cotton maxi dresses that was cheap and trying to get it to work for a robe I gave up.
I bought myself a 230$ polyester black with a drop of burgundy, it’s a two piece with a (loose) waistband. It’s gorgeous and comfortable, yet still polyester and not one peice (a sleeveless dress with a cardigan)
I cried all the way home. I’ve never spent so much money on myself on a POLY dress.
But I enjoyed it on Rosh Hashana so I guess that’s what Hashem wanted me to get for Yomtov.

Trust me they don’t cost $20 to make as someone who imports from China. Everyone thinks everyone else is making a killing. They don’t add the side zippers to all robes cause they would add at least $20 to each robe. If they would make the hips wider then it wouldn’t fit most people. They go by the average sorry ur not average. I use to be Heavier and use to think most are like me but size large is the most popular size not the xl or xxl. But one thing u should be complaining about which u didn’t is that our sizes are way off I can wear a size medium from none Jewish stores and need at least an xl in frum one.. why are they making everyone feel bad about themselves…. Again cause of the $$$. It cost way more to add 2” more to each dress I know it Dosnt seem like that to u… but times that 2” 🥲1000… Unfortunately our $$ has very little worth after all the covid stimulus.. our groceries went up 40% u think robes won’t? I hear u load and clear about the breathable materials.. I hate it I cried when I bleached my breathable robe V

It’s a matter if personal opinion. I got one of those robes and I like how it looks. I was just showing how you can find robes for a lot cheaper

I thought a lot of them were really pretty too.
It's definitely just a matter of opinion.

This would need a shell and zippers added, each of which costs more than the robe itself lol. But might be worth it, if it fits well.
