I live in NYC and am looking for someone who can help my 11 year old who loves to sing but is always hoarse. It also bothers him when he speaks. He’s been asking about voice therapy but I haven’t been able to find something affordable/appropriate. Any ideas? I would consider online as well.

You can try Touro speech clinic on Quentin and e9. Students practice with your kid (60 min session )but it's highly supervised. Their rates a few years ago were very reasonable. Not prohibitive at all. Every term though you get a different student to work with your kid, so no continuity like that. I did it for two years. I was happy.

Brooklyn college also has a speech clinic but it costs more. If you don't live nearby any of my suggestions, find out if a college near you has a speech program and find out if they have a clinic.

Have you checked for the physical cause of the hoarseness? It could be GERD for example.

I know u didn’t ask this, but as a speech therapist , I wouldn’t work with your child before sending you to an ENT to see if there’s possible nodules, polyps or gerd that might be causing it. Once anything physical is ruled out and it’s just that he’s straining his voice or using it the wrong way. Then a voice therapist can work with your child

Thanks. A college program sounds like an interesting idea. We did go to an ENT but he brushed it off and said he was too young for therapy because he wouldn’t cooperate. That was a while ago when lots of providers were still offering telemedicine. Now he’s older but pulling him out of school is a problem.

My daughter is younger than your son, has a hoarse voice since she’s little. Took her to ENT, she has nodules.
