Did anyone understand the story
"It takes a village"?
I didn't grasp what she went thru to realize the ending...

To me it felt as if she had an experience of a Down syndrome being hidden in her past… or something like that. I would love an explanation. I felt something but I’m not sure what.

I highly doubt anyone understood exactly what had occurred. It was as if , the author wanted to leave us perplexed. If anyone has any insights … please share :-)

I thought (not 100% sure but maybe) it was a coded way of saying she was molested when she was younger and unprotected.

I thought that too. After rereading it a few times. But why would that cause her to react the way she did towards the DS baby?

That's exactly what I thought, but the connection...I'd love to know.

I really didn't understand the point of the article, there seemed to be a lot of missing pieces
But also, as a parent of a child with down syndrome, I found it pretty disturbing how it brought up an unhealthy reaction with no clarity or explanation or seemingly no point.

I think the author saw herself as vulnerable and needing protection at age 13- sounds like she was abused-

This is how I understood it. She wasn't protected as a kid. The 'village' wasn't there for her, and she's afraid her sister will suffer with a ds child. Obviously it's a different scenario (it seems) but she's triggered. But with time she sees her sister managing well, she seems healthy and indeed has the proverbial village to help her.
