I've always used extra virgin olive oil in potato kugel, it's delicious. I use EVOO in pretty much everything except baking. Including my (very delicious and popular if I do say so myself Smile) balsamic dressing. What do you mean by thick? Do you mean if you refrigerate it solidifies?

Surprised no-one mentioned sunflower oil - I buy it at Trader Joes.

I use a good quality extra virgin olive oil and no one noticed the difference. If you use a cheap extra virgin olive oil, it may have a bitter taste and people might not like it

I don't make it every week but I've made it 5 times since I posted.

Dh thinks its time for a new recipe.

No he doesn't know that I don't used canola oil anymore.

Yes he used to love my potato kugel

Can't Believe It

This may be an unpopular opinion but - go buy canola oil and make your regular kugel. Nothing works as well (in my opinion), and in moderation it’s fine.

Interesting, I love extra virgin olive oil in my tomato dip. It gives it a rich chefs flavor.

Question to all those who use exclusively evoo. Do you not find it crazy expensive? Dh absolutely loves extra virgin olive oil but he expects high quality ones and they go too fast for the price!

I make my kugel with extra light olive oil. It’s always a hit (I used to use sunflower or canola oil)
On pesach I use EVoO and every year my kids complain
About the evoo for salad dressing:
I only use high quality evoo, but I definitely find it has an aftertaste also is thick. Have tried various brands

I don’t like avocado oil in potato kugel. The extra light olive tastes delicious ur dh might have not liked the avocado flavor - I notice it if it’s used instead of olive

Avocado oil has a taste that can ruin the flavor of stuff. I use extra light olive oil and tastes just as good as canola (but so much more expensive)

This! Try with schmaltz. Next choice would be either EVOO or coconut oil.

Sunflower oil and light olive oil are just as bad as canola or vegetable oil.
All processed the same way and NOT healthy.

Why are people using extra light olive oil? It’s almost as bad as canola oil.

I've done my research on seed oils and I really don't feel comfortable using it in my own kitchen.

I eat it in other people's home, or in store bought foods and feel a difference.

Light olive oil is just as bad
