I am thinking of purchasing an electric hotplate to use this yom tov. Can anyone share their experience with one? What are the halachic considerations? Can you put the pot or foil-wrapped package of food directly on the hotplate?
Is the hotplate used only for warming or can you cook on it?
Which brand and model do you recommend?

I bought this and I'm very happy with it. It has safety certification and works very well. I set it to the low setting and tape the knob. I've only used it for Shabbos, never for a 3-day YT. It keeps the food nice and hot.

I only use it to keep cooked food hot. It's not meant to be used to cook raw food.

Yes, you can put the pot or the foil pan directly on the hot plate.

Please ask your LOR if you're allowed to use it like that on shabbos.

Why wouldn't it be allowed? It's a regular hot plate. If the knob is covered or taped, it's fine to use on shabbos.

You might need to cover the entire heating surface area.
