I actually twice ended up renting from people I knew so didn't have to worry about that.
But I've heard horror stories about this!

I know someone who bought an apartment from someone who wasn't the owner. It was a long story.

In bp there was a story. It was a couple that was divorcing. House was on husbands name and wife tried selling it. Don't know what ended up happening.

Someone shows the apartment and then negotiates the contract. But the renters never really meet the owner for some reason and aren't really sure who signed the contract.

We have the same question. If a solicitor checks the contract can they check it's the owner? We've only been speaking to the current tenant.
