Both should be offered, neither should be mandatory.
I do think a science should be mandatory (ie if you don't take physics, you should take chemistry or biology or general science). While I wouldn't make home ec mandatory at all.
Why - because many people come in to high school knowing home ec at the highest level they're going to need. (Obviously you can always learn more, about any topic, but in general I think schools should only require education to a certain minimum, and after that let each teen decide for themselves.) But OTOH the majority of students aren't scientifically literate when they come into high school.

The problem is that the home ec was not taken seriously.
We had a class called cooking in 9th grade. Most people didn't bother showing up.
I wish we would have had a class on economics- but in a practical way.
How to balance a checkbook, keep a budget, prioritize spending, savings, etc.
