Is it appropriate to watch with my dh?
He's never watched any movies before.

If not, any recommendations?

I've watched it with dh. We muted the sections when there were women singing.

The storyline is of the lives of a Jewish family living in a shtetel in Russia.
Rachel's place did it in a frummer version. It's called shtetel.

Most of it is appropriate.
There are women singing.
There's at least one scene of kissing, but it's like a second.
It takes you to the inside of a church for one scene.

There's a scene that disturbed me as a kid, where at the wedding of Tzeitel and Mottel, everyone starts to fight, and Perchik quiets everyone and proposes to dance publicly with Hodel. People say its forbidden. He says, its not forbidden. Then he says, "go on, ask the rabbi!".
The rabbi says , "well, its not exactly forbidden, but.."
That's enough for Perchik and Hodel and they immediately start dancing together.
First, everyone is upset, but then, one by one, all the men demand to dance with their wives, and even the rabbi is seen happily dancing with a girl.

It’s based on the “Tevye the dairyman” stories by Sholom Aleichem. Worth reading.

Um, you mean the classic film by Norman Jewison and starring Haim Topol and based on the stage play by Sholom Aleichem?

That non-Jewish one?

And worth watching. Though maybe not men. This play has a lot to do with the reason my husband became frum actually. Or it’s just part of his story.

each of the daughters represents the different generations and how far away they move from religious life.

Makes me cry. Seeing how a simple (and probably uneducated) Jew has such a deep connection to G-d, how they value tradition so strongly, yet 2 of his daughters leave yiddishkeit in such a tragic way, and they end up all being expelled from the village. (Sorry for the spoiler!)
It's probably a story that happened many many times over in history.

(And yes the scene with dancing at the wedding is pretty upsetting too)

Newsies is a clean classic. Mostly boys singing and dancing . There's 1 kissing scene at end and there's a scene at a night club\theater you need to skip with lady signing and dancing. No hashkafah issues....

The book is even sadder, his youngest daughter commits suicide.

It's a movie about abandoning yiddishkeit and making fun of Torah. With singing and dancing. I don't think it's worth wasting time on.
