I think the solution would be only to make small simchas for close family and friends, it will help to bring down the cost plus whoever comes will be happy being there.

Many families are large. With grandkids and married couples they are more than XL. Close family isn't automatically small simchas.
I'm not even talking about friends, it just takes two large families.

We did this for our last son's bar mitzvah. We only invited our friends who are family friends and who he knows. He didn't want strangers at his party.
And he had his friends of course, and all of our family who could make it.
It was lovely.
No coworkers had to be invited or long lost friends.
