I'm a first year high school teacher and pretty nervous.

Please give me your best tips and tricks to keep my students engaged and how to deal with discipline. The thought of dealing with teenagers who misbehave and disrupt makes my heart sink into my stomach.

What has worked for you when girls talk, eat, drink, leave?

Best system that worked for you?

I'm going to preface this by saying that I have my own troubles with classroom management. I've been teaching 9th and 11th grade for several years and I sometimes don't know what to do.
But here are some tips I have heard and believe in:
*come in as boss. although you want to show you care about them, don't start the year being nice.
*walk around the classroom. if someone is doing off task behavior, stand near them. it works without disturbing your lesson.
*tell the class rules - no eating, no drinking, no getting out of your seat.
*if someone is breaking a rule, or the class gets very chatty, I will take out my roll book and start writing. it often shuts them up. (I actually have a page for behaviorals. will write "T" for talking, "E" for eating, etc. the school has a performance grade done by the principals. so if someone eats often, it will be reflected in that grade.
*don't let things slide. be consistent.
