His wife Temmi was my teacher in high school. I remember when she got engaged. She is the sweetest person. Hashem should give her and her kids koach.

I wish I knew!
There are going to be asifos. Rabbanim will speak. Please ladies, if your rav or someone says something that resonates, that can help us process this, please share the words you remember or a link.

What are we supposed to learn?
Not to take vacations? I fargin the vacations. Even being imcha anochi b'tzarah with EY, we're entitled to some time to relax and regroup. This was low-key and close to home.
Life jackets, basic safety, etc.? Sure. But like Meron, this is NOT the time to start hyperanalyzing things. We have every reason to believe they took reasonable precautions. It's not our business. It's definitely not the time.
And like Meron, anyway, uch and vey if that's the only lesson we take. I don't remember what the lessons are. I just remember Donny Morris's to-do list (that he to-did, regularly) and how we were all encouraged to try to continue to do too. Look at my signature lines. Torah and maasim tovim with the messages of my sig line as template. Can we do that?

It seems todays tragedy was not exactly a drowning as per the articles. We must have emunah and bitachon as these things can happen in so many ways. That being said hishtadlus is key and crucial.

Hashem yishmor.
Growing up, my father would always tell us never to go on the Delaware River because when he was learning in the Mirrer (I think in the early 80s), there was a young man who lost his life there. We lived in Brooklyn, so I never really thought it was relevant to me.
When I was older, a group of girls invited me rafting there and I went with them. I disregarded what my father said, thinking that it must have been a fluke, and we were fine.
I'd think a lot more before ever going there again after this round of news.

BDE
Since it’s an unusual name, is his sister Pia now Berkowitz?

I'm pretty sure that whatever lesson we are supposed to learn has nothing to do with anything the niftarim did wrong.
It is a lesson that we are supposed to learn from the unusual timing and eerie similarity of the two tragedies.
In the time of Dovid Hamelech, there was a plague that killed 100 people daily. The lesson was not better nutrition, avoiding large gatherings, or exercise to avoid such deaths. The lesson was to make sure to say 100 brachos every day.
What is the lesson from this tragedy?
Maybe something to do with our attitude to parnasa, which is compared to "many waters" that threaten to drown us. If we allow ourselves to be thrown completely into the quest for materialism, that is like throwing ourselves into those waters. Keeping focused on Torah (perhaps as the niftarim did) is the antidote for the danger of the water.
Or maybe another lesson. But Hashem did not orchestrate this series of events for us to claim that their deaths were preventable and that the lesson is life jackets or avoiding family time on the water.

I think it was a medical emergency. Not a drowning.
