For those of you who do/did nurse, did you nurse on one side for a specific amount of time and then go to the other side, or did you let your baby finish on one side and then try to other side?
Sometimes my son will nurse on one side for around 10 mins and then pull off, but sometimes he just stays on the first side and falls asleep! I dont know if I souhld really try to wake him up? Esp. in mid of the night! How can I get him to go longer between feedings, and whats the best way to nurse

Hope I made some sense, theres a lot of q's about it on my mind I guess.

How old is your baby?

check out "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding : (la leche league)" it is very informative and helpful.

I let my baby finish one side and if she's hungry she will go to the other they say that the best milk to drink is the hind milk it makes the babies gain weight so they should finish a side in order to get it if one switches too early they will only get the watery fore milk.
when my dd was a newborn she had one side about every 2-3 hours. I would try to stretch the time in between so she would be able to last for 3 hours and before bed every 2-1/2 hours before I would put her asleep and then she would last about 6-7-8 hours now that she is older I give her both sides. how old is your baby? some babies only need to eat for 10 minutes or less I used to think that my son ate too fast but looking back at pictures he was a good weight and not skinny at all.
falling asleep is also ok he probablly felt cosy with is mommy, and milk makes him sleepy. but the only problem of it is that he could get used to it and it will be the only way he could fall asleep and evey time he wakes up you have to nurse him,
now that my dd is older( 4 months old) I'm trying to get her to be able to go about 4 hours between feeds, so I hold her distract her play with her, give her a sussy... so far its working!
a good book to read is tracy hogg the baby whisperer solves all of your problems. she gives some good advice about schedules how often your baby needs to eat and how long naps should be and some strategies of how to get your baby to sleep through the night. I suggest try getting it from the library before buying it you might not like it. I hope that you will understand what I wrote!

I switch sides. if 1st feeding is on the right side then 2nd feeding is on the left. I was told to let them finish one side per feeding cause the breastmilk at the begining of the feeding is more like water and towards the end is where most of the fat and nutrients are.
if baby falls asleep let him sleep he'll wake when hungry again (I believe that u shouldnt let them go for 4 hrs w/o nursing when an infant, cause then they are too tired to wake themselves up to eat).
the older the baby gets the longer it will sleep b/t feedings.

with my first I only nursed one side each feed. And then would change to the other the next feed. If your baby fell alseep and had a decent feed then there in no reason to wake the baby up.

I always feel weird nursing just one side. I make sure the baby has emptied one side before switching though. I personally usually don't let my babies fall asleep while nursing, because I want them to get all that hind milk. Plus, I almost always nurse immediately when they wake up so theoretically they should be able to stay awake for at least a little while (after the first few weeks that is).

when a baby is young, and you see him/her fall asleep while drinking (so not fast asleep yet), you can tickle him/her under his/her foot, or rub earlobe gently between your fingers.
that tends to wake them a bit, and then they drink better.

I used to switch sides after 15 minutes, but I was always watching the clock-too complicated. now I switch off every feeding and it all evens out.

when I first started nursing I would get infections alot... I then found out that I have too much mil so I only nursed on one side per feeding to help my body produce less milk. I love nursing on only one side. its so much easier then having to switch... especially in middle of the night!! Anyways in general amother, I think every baby is different and its good to do whatever your baby likes... if he likes to nurse for 10 min fine, if 20 fine. my baby only nurses for 5 minutes!!! thats all she wants and needs because she is a very fast and strong sucker.

Ditto happymom! The best thing I ever did when nursing my son was to feed only one side per feeding. No worries about hindmilk, no worries about my hyperactive letdown issue, and it's just easier not to have to switch over every time! Of course, you may have to feed from both sides if you have a low milk supply. And you hafta remember which side's turn it is! A safety pin or bobby pin is a good reminder.

same here-bh, only one side per feeding. don't time it. take your cue from the baby.
if your baby is growing nicely and in good spirits, then he's doing fine:don't wake him at night to nurse! enjoy the time and sleep! if he's hungry, he'll wake you and let you know. good luck

same here. I would offer the 2nd side, but he was already full. So I alternated.

let me keep it simple- there is absolutely NO correct way to nurse. I nursed one way and everyone else I know nursed another. However you do it is fine as long as the baby is eating and gaining.

just a little tip that my mom taught me- if the baby falls asleep at night while nursing, just tickle his feet- they seem to wake right up and continue nursing. It worked for me.

Good luck

In answer to the title question, no, but there are incorrect ways, to wit: While driving a car; while swimming; hanging by your fingertips from a fire escape; in macy's window.... LOL

well, in theory you could lie on the floor and do leg lifts, or hold the baby in one arm and do arm or wrist curls with the other, but IMO that's carrying multitasking too far! LOL
