We are in an out-of-town community. We have a rising 8th grader. When do people apply for high schools? Tell me about the process. Also looking for school ideas... Ideally looking for a place with good secular and Judaics with a dorm. My son should be prepared for college level work once he graduates. He wears a black hat but I'd describe us as JPF/OOT Yeshivish. Am I looking for a unicorn school? Any tips/school ideas?

Your son's rebbe should be able to guide you.
Typically the process is after Sukkos, around November through February.

Look into Mta. My son had a couple of roommates over the years who sound like your son.

We didn't go to either but check out WITS in Milwaukee and MTI in St. Louis. I've heard great things about both. They also both do Shabbatons for 8th grade boys so they can visit, see the yeshiva, and do their farher while there. I've heard great things about Minneapolis as well.

The general rule I was told is apply after Sukkos, farhers after Chanukah, you hear back before Pesach.

In my OOT community parents who want what you describe either pick WITS or Ner Naftali.

How competitive is it to get into these places? My son is a bright, very hardworking student. He is advanced in chol- but Judaics is not as strong. No learning disabilities or anything like that- just not as strong, and I suspect would advance with the right curriculum/rebbe.

I would say Kesser Torah in baltimore, but there is no dorming for under 11th grade, so you'd need to find a boarding family and transportation arragements.

Darchei does not take out of towners for high school. There is a dorm but it’s just for 11th grade and up.
