Wasn't sure which forum to put this under... But for those who cut their sons' hair, does it have to be a special machine or does a regular beard trimmer work?

I don’t know.
Our haircut machine comes with a beard trimmer but we don’t use the beard trimmer. (Lubavitch)

It wouldn't work well, especially if you want to do anything elaborate. It's different type of hair.
Dh uses a beard trimmer to even out DS back hair. He what one specifically for this purpose, he finds it easier to handle for the finer work.
