On vacation. Someone said they had a car seat for us. Turns out it’s only forward facing. My baby is 5 months old. Is it safer to hold my baby in my lap (in the back seat) or use a forward facing car seat?

Well look at the chances of making a small short stop and being in a car crash.
The reason why a young child needs to be in a rear facing car seat is because their neck bone isn't strong enough to handle the head wobble caused by a short stop or going over a speed bump.

Buy a cheap one. If it’s only forward facing it’s not the right size for your baby and it won’t be safe in a crash. None are good options. A wrong seat can cause serious injuries. Holding your baby is a risk of death. This is a cheap seat. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Cos.....26745

Keep looking. Where are you going to be? Maybe someone else here has one to lend you.

Neither option is safe. It’s never safe to hold a baby while the car is moving. A forward-only car seat is not the right size for an infant, and an infant needs to be rear facing. You need to get a rear-facing infant car seat.

I thought you were going to be asking about a toddler. For a 5 month old?! Their necks are nowhere near strong enough for forward facing.

Do you want to tell us where you are so someone can lend you a proper seat?

Where are you vacationing that there's no Walmart or Target or anything? Get an infant car seat. I don't know what you paid for your vacation but it's worth $60 or whatever for the cheapest appropriate seat.

A forward facing car seat offers some protection. Your lap offers none.

Not for a 5 month old baby!

Neither of those are safe options. Please spend $60 and buy a carseat for your precious baby.

5 month olds have very little neck control, so no, it could cause positional asphyxiation even if the car ride is uneventful.

Hi! Thank you for your responses. Im vacationing in Miami but it’s just for over shabbos and we won’t be driving around except back to the airport. I put my baby in the baby carrier and rode in the back and just prayed we’d be fine. I’m going to look into a rear facing seat for the way back to the airport because this was really nerve wracking. DH doesn’t want to spend the money on a car seat. This vacation was gifted to us and we really can’t afford any extras so I’m trying to get one for free

Some car services (the more expensive ones of course) have car seats. Also rental car agencies can get you one together with the car - don't know if it's a common service but I've heard of it.

In the future might be worth getting them to pay for another seat and taking the infant seat on the plane with you so that you always have a car seat. It’s also better for baby on the plane.

Agreed. We had a bassinet seat on the plane and just had him on my lap with a baby seatbelt attached to mine for takeoff and landing. We were relying on the car seat that we were told we’d have. It actually is a rear facing seat but it revolves and the base went missing. Without the base, it can only be used as forward facing.
