Obviously not backpacks or other larger items, and I usually just buy it for my kids. I don’t take them to choose. Can I do it and put away for after 9 days? I mean it won’t be exciting to me but it might be to my kids?

Many hold that shopping in the 9 days is not allowed, besides for essentials (food, household supplies...) needed during the 9 days.

AIUI, if there's something for sale now that won't be available after Tisha B'Av, you're allowed to buy it but not use it. But AYLOR. I don't recall if a sale price that will go back up but the merch will still be available justifies buying now.
