If fruit makes me gassy (no pain, just embarassing), will it make me gassy forever and I just have to learn to restrict it, or can my body get used to it if I start with like 1/2 fruit a day, then slowly increase portion size?

Look into sibo and yeast overgrowth. The sugar in fruit can be feeding bad microbes in your gut which basically end up fermenting them. The gas is the byproduct of fermentation.

That means that your digestion is moving too slowly for fruit. Fruit is meant to pass quickly through the system.
Try eating fruit first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, when you didn't eat right before bed and see if it still happens then. You may be able to eat fruit alone, just not with other foods.

In general if you have not had a diet with fiber, then your body will adjust when you add fiber.
I eat obscene amounts of fruit and I don't have gas - on the other hand I am not constipated so I have a daily bowel movement
In general fruit isn't the issue since the fiber tends to be water soluble as opposed to the kind of fiber that is in whole grains.
Beano or the equivalent really helps with gas.
