Get soooo gassy when I cut out added sugar!

This is weird and I can't understand it. Twice (now and 2 years ago) I have cut out added sugar and white flour from my diet, and both times it has made me super gassy. How does this make sense?

I know you're thinking I'm probably eating a lot more veggies, beans, etc, but I'm not!!!

This time around all the calories I used to spend on sugar is now going mostly to whole grains and butter, and a little to fruit, and when I ate added sugar I could also eat whole grains, butter and fruit without it making me gassy.

No new foods in my diet.

It really seems like it is the ABSENSE OF ADDED SUGAR that is making me super gassy. Why???

IIRC two years ago when I did this, I stayed super gassy until I started to eat added augar again 😳

I was eating A LOT of added sugar before starting this diet 2 weeks ago. I feel great except the gassiness, which doesn't hurt but is embarassing and smelly.

Any clue what is going on??

Maybe your body is going thru a detox?

Also, are you using any sugar substitutes?

Maybe, but I don't have any other symptoms. Actually, surprisingly, the very 1st day I cut out added sugar I already had no sugar cravings! (IMO butter helps with this -- a lot of cookie/brownie/icecream cravings are just fat cravings, the sugar is unnecessary)

I have a protein shake with a fake sugar about once every 2 or 3 days... wouldn't think that is enough to cause gassiness every single day.

Yeah, I highly doubt it’s the cutting out sugar that’s causing it… no doubt it’s the increase in other foods, high fiber, etc.

Im betting its this. Lots of the fake sugars specifically cause really terrible gas. Having it evry 2 days, I'd think theres a big chance its that.

Try cutting it out and see what happens

I have the same problem! If I'm on a high carb diet (plus junk) I have no gastro issues. When I cut back and start integrating healthy stuff such as fruits, veggies and low sugar stuff, I get extremely gassy. The gassiness continues to plague me until I go back to my carbs and then it quickly disappears.

It isn't the high fiber, because I don't eat much of whole grain foods. It's reg white bread, bagels, potatoes etc that seem to calm my gut.

I would love an answer to this because I would love to switch to a healthy diet both for health and weight purposes, but every time I start I have to give up due to the discomfort.

I second the fake sugars

Could also be die off -- bacteria, yeast and parasites that previously fed off the simple sugars are dying out in droves, and breaking them down produces metabolites that produce gas. Just a theory.

I don't bekieve it is the fake sugar. I occasionally drank this exact same protein shake when also eating sugar and white flour and did not ever notice extra gassiness. And I would have noticed because this isn't a little extra gassiness, it is a LOOOT!

How long would the bacteria die off take to complete?

I'm breastfeeding so I eat about 2,600 calories/day. Before I would eat about 1,000 calories of sweets/day (I know!), now I would say those 1,000 calories of sweets have been replaced by 400 calories butter, 400 whole grain bread, 200 fruit.

The butter doesn't have fiber, but the whole grain bread and fruit do, so I guess it could simply be that my fiber intake has gone way up. (I thought I was lazy by not eating more veggies, but if this is the case, it is for the best at this point).

I am not picky about the type of whole grain bread or fruit, so I will do some research about which types have less fiber and try that.

UPDATE:

FRUIT IS THE CULPRIT!!!!!!!!

I was thinking "but I ate fruit before when I ate sugar and it never made me gassy", but I was seriously overestimating how often I ate fruit when I also ate white sugar. It was probably 1 fruit/week back then. Then when I quit white sugar, I was probably averaging 3 fruits/day, which I didn't think was excessive, but today I didn't eat any fruit, and what do you know? No excessive gas!

I found out that the whole wheat bread I'm buying does have extra fiber, but I seem to tolerate that fine, as I've already had 6 pieces today. I will switch brands though when I finish this one.

I guess I should limit myself to 1fruit/day... maybe give my body time to get used to eating fruit?

Fruit causing gas can be a food combination issue, meaning, when you eat it together with protein or carbs it doesn't digest well and causes all food in your stomach to putrefy. Some people can only tolerate fruit on an empty stomach. Look up food combining/food hygiene principles for more information on this.

Yes there is a theory that fruit causes gas if eaten together with carbs or protein so accordingly it has to be eaten at least half hour before meals.
