My son just finished 5th grade. He has a lot of hair in the mustache area. If he would be a girl I would definitely take care of it. But he’s a boy and it’s a little more normal to have facial hair…. I heard that if you start shaving early it grows back thicker and faster. But I don’t want him to stand out among his peers.
Is shaving at this age too early to start?
He mentioned his new mustache to me a few times… I don’t want him to feel uncomfortable.
Time for a shaver or try to push it off?

That’s really young for a boy. Also you might want to make sure his thyroid and hormone levels are in normal range.

I didn’t really think about this being a problem. My older son did shave right before his bar mitzvah and I thought that was very young… so when I noticed upper lip hair recently I figured my boys must start young. He finished 5th grade but he started school a year late so he is close to 12. Also I think his voice is starting to change. Is this something to worry about?

It does seem quite young, but if he has dark hair/ dark skin it's normal for boys to develop a bit of a mustache already.
My boys started shaving more like 15.

When my son was 9 he had a mustache growing whoooo was I nervous, I was told to not touch it and it will settle. Its now 3years later and it still hasn't grown much longer. So my advice to you is not to touch it.

My boys started at 12/13 but they had significant facial hair at that point. Their sefira beards are the envy of their high school lol.

Thanks
His regular hair color is dirty blonde/light brown but the mustache hairs are dark. They’re at the ends of both sides of his upper lip. Thin hairs, but because they are dark, it’s visible. On one hand I so badly want to buy him a shaver for those few hairs but I definitely don’t want it to grow back thicker and fuller so I’m leaving it. Maybe after the summer, before he goes back to school? By then he’ll almost be 12. It doesn’t seem to bother him. Yesterday he was looking in the mirror and said, Ma, I’m really getting a mustache. I asked him if anyone else in his class has a mustache and he said no but he didn’t seem upset that he might be the only one. A minute later he was running outside and playing with neighbors. So I guess it makes sense to leave it for now.

My son just turned 13 and he started shaving his mustache right around his birthday and his voice started changing the same time. He mentioning other kids having hair there and starting to shave it well over a year ago so 12 sounds on the early side of normal. He shaves once a week, it’s a not a big deal and he feels good about it. It’s literally just how upper lip take a minute he has nothing on his chin.

After someone above wrote that it seems very early and I should speak to my doctor, I googled and according to Dr google normal age for puberty in males between 9-14. It says that on a few different websites so even though I still wish he would have more time to be a little boy, this is considered normal.
He does not have any other facial hair. Only on the sides of his lip.

It's a myth.

Does he care. My son had more hair on his upper lip and he really Tudor care. Shaving for the boys (or at least mine) us a pain and they would just rather not.

I just spoke to my husband about this. My brothers started shaving at some point in high school but my older son shaved his thin mustache area right before his bar mitzvah. My husband said that a boy this age is very normal to start having hair. It’s the earlier side of the norm but it’s not like he’s 8 years old. He’ll be 12 in a few weeks. My husband doesn’t remember when he started shaving but he has a lot of brothers and he thinks this is considered normal age. I would have been happy having him look more mature at 15 but this is how it happened. I showed him how to use the shaver by his upper lip the other day. It took him a few seconds and I haven’t noticed new hairs growing yet so hopefully he’ll only have to do this every once and a while in the beginning.

My 16 year old shaves once a week. There’s barely anything.
