I make challah in there every week.

I just mix and rise. But then shape and bake in my oven.

It’s a 2.5 lb machine.
I got the base of this recipe years ago on this website. https://www.imamother.com/foru.....47972

6.5 cups flour.
1/2 cup sugar
1 T salt
1 egg
1/2 cup oil
2 cup water
1.5 T yeast

Mix and rise in machine. Remove. Shape. I do 3-4 very small challah. Rise 1 hr. Paint. Bake

Looks delicious, thank you! Would it work to add sugar to make it sweeter?

It has 1/2 c sugar. I don’t think it needs more. But you could try if you want.
You can go back to the original recipe thread and see if ppl discuss adding sugar.

I make a pizza recipe from joy of cooking cook book that is sooo good.

3 3/4 cup flour
3/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
3 tbsp olive oil
1 1/2 cups water

Mix on pizza mode in bread machine. Roll out in pizza.
Makes 2-3 pies

I haven’t made in a while bec I switched to sourdough but this was my go to recipe

I make a (sweet) challah dough recipe every week in the 2.5 lb machine. I love the machine! So much easier to use than the Bosch. I also like the texture.
(With one batch you should take challah - say the brocha but without saying Hashems name )
I put all the ingredients in the machine and then take out to rise and braid. I bake them in the oven. I get 2 med/large challos or 3 small/medium.

Here’s my recipe-

2 packets of quick rise yeast (or 4.5 teaspoons)
2 cups of lukewarm water (a drop warmer than lukewarm)
1 tablespoons of sugar
[This will proof the yeast and make a larger dough. Wait a few minutes now and then add the rest of the ingredients.]
7/12- 8 cups of flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup oil
2 tsp salt
Mix
Take out dough and rub with a little oil. Cover and let rise for an hour. Then braid and egg (seed).
Place in oven at 225 for 20 minutes
Raise oven to 400 for 15 minutes
Lower to 375 for 20 minutes

I also played around with the ingredients to get a recipe for 1 large challah to bake in the bread machine. I love it but my family prefers the texture when it’s baked in the oven.
I make a sweet dough since that’s what my family prefers.
Let me know if you want that recipe.

Thanks I would love the smaller recipe because looks mine is a 2lb machine.
As an aside, I was reading through the manual and it says to first put the wet ingredients, then the dry ingredients and the yeast on top and that the yeast shouldn't touch any liquid. Does that make any sense? Is that how these machines work?

No.

Follow the directions for your machine. Each one does it differently. Mine is dry first. Then wet. And yeast goes in its own container.

I’d follow the basic ingredients and adapt to your machine.

I make any dough in there. Any normal recipe should work. Here's an excellent pizza dough recipe: https://www.allrecipes.com/rec.....ough/

And my machine has the same order as yours, it's important if you're setting it to bake later so the yeast doesn't mix with the liquid.

I’ll type up the recipe soon.
I think they are giving you instructions for traditional bread.
There’s really very little out there with instructions to bake challah in the bread machine. I guess some people are fine with something that resembles a loaf of bread but I knew my family would not appreciate that for shabbos. (Some people are totally fine with it)
I really wanted sweet challah so I tried a few different things before I got this right. Some of the recipes I made really didn’t come out good. It took a while until I got it right. At one point I was even thinking about returning the machine since I primarily bought it for challah but now I love it and use it every week.
Actually as I’m following this thread it’s making me want to bake challah today even though I’m going away for shabbos!

Bread:
1 1/2 cups water
4 tbs oil
4 cups flour
4-5 tbs sugar (use less if you want less sweet)
1 1/2 tsp dry yeast
2 tsp salt

add wet ingredients in bread machine then add rest. Make sure salt and yeast don't touch
