DH and I both really enjoy them but we have discovered that apparently they are a rare commodity in most kosher bagel shops. Curious if we are unusual in our enjoyment of them!

I don't see them but I love pumpernickel raisin bread which is also hard to find.
I realized that I don't like the modern bagel at all - it is too soft and doughy. I remember the bagels of my youth which were smaller and chewier. They now add dough softener typically because as bagels became less of an ethnic food, they adapted to modern tastes.
I used to love to get one hot bagel on a winter day from the little bagel shop on Coney Island Avenue and eat it on my way home.

I do like them but they're not my first choice. It is my mom's favorite though, so I have noticed it's not always available.

I can’t answer as I don’t know if you are referring to with or without caraway seeds.
Love the pumpernickel bagel with sesame seeds on top. Hate the ones with caraway seeds inside.

I don't like pumpernickel.
My grandmother's cousin AH told me that when she was a child, she visited my grandmother's home in Czechoslovakia in the summer. She didn't like "kimmel broidt" (pumpernickel bread) that my great-grandmother made, so she climbed on the roof and left the crusts there.
Guess it runs in the family - either you like it (and bake it) or you don't.....

Traditionally it is a dark brown bread made with a sour dough starter and using rye flour.
It is more popular in Europe than the US as it is a very traditional "peasant" bread.
It is chewy and dense like real rye bread.
I say "real" because so much commercial made bread uses a lot of dough softeners and doesn't have the texture of good chewy bread.
Probably more than you want to know

Pumpernickel bagels are my favorite, especially with scallion cream cheese and lox. I don't like caraway seeds though. I can get them from some bagel stores and not others, and some bagel stores have a pale imitation of pumpernickel that's not worth eating.
