Retail therapy is seldom effective and can result in feelings of guilt, to say nothing of a cluttered home. I'm surprised that the advice wasn't "do something nice for somebody else."

I LOVE shopping (for myself and others) I'm pretty content. Don't think it stems from lack of happiness.
