Does anyone know if the soferet google group is active, and if so how to join it? Do you find it a useful tool for networking writing-related job opportunities?

Yes, it's active!
I'm on there as an illustrator, not artist, so I can't answer much about job opportunities. But I do see jobs posted every now and then.
