In a supermarket I go to they have baked goods in the back and someone weighing them and putting a sticker with the price on the bag. Then its expected that you can eat it before you pay. (don't worry , I asked the man weighing just to be sure.

I know halachically it usser, but now I'm thinking about what Green said about restaurants. Really, how are they different?

Because in a restaurant the owner obviously agrees that people eat his food and then pay him later.

If the food or drink is in a closed package, why would eating in a supermarket and paying later be ossur? You pay for the package whether or not its contents are still inside, just like all the other packages you "take" first and then pay for at checkout.

The stuff in your trolley (cart for you Yankeedoodles) doesn't belong to you, it belongs to the owner of the supermarket. Once you've paid for it, it belongs to you. You are still not allowed to steal even though you have full intention of paying for what you stole.

I'm just imagining how they would look at me in the supermarket if I would ask permission for my kids to eat or drink something before I pay for it. Not to mention I would have to line up for a few minutes to even speak to someone.

Why does this mean that it's not geneiva?

Why can't people bring a small snack/drink with them to give their kids in the store?

We were once in line behind ppl who brought their own snack from another store when ds (then 3) announced loudly "That boy is eating a snack before his mommy paid!" At least the mother had a chuckle and explained she bought it from a different store!

well, thanks to shalhevet, I probably will be asking the store manager if it is ok to eat or drink food before I pay for it. I am quite sure they will say it is ok though. and they will probably think I am stupid for asking. But thats ok. they think I am stupid for spending who knows how much money on kosher food.

People could bring stuff with, in an ideal world. Alas I am not so orginised.

I recall reading a case of a supermarket in england accusing a mother of shoplifting becasue she gave her child an apple without paying for it. They said becasue it was from the loose produce, that needs to be weighed, it was stealing. If she would have taken a pre weighed bag of apples with a barcode, and taken one out, they would have been ok with it.
