I've never had a dishwasher before and got one this week. I am complete newbie when it comes to dishwashers, I've never used one before. Any and all tips/advice/instructions would be helpful! Thanks!

Get the manual. These are available on line at the manufacturer’s website.
In general modern washing machines work best if you just scrape your dishes because they need a bit of food to clean effectively. But obviously not large masses. And pre rinsing wastes water and actually doesn’t help the process.
Most modern dishwashers need to use the rinsing agent and there is usually a place to put it specifically. Again consult your manual.

You can usually skip the heat/dry cycle, as once the dishes are done they are hot enough to air dry quickly. Also, avoid citrus/lemon in your detergent as that wears away on the design-especially gold.

Never Ever a single drop of regular liquid dishwashing detergent get into the dishwasher.
It could cost you a pretty penny for a repairman and forfeit any warranty too.
Not every item is dishwasher frieny. No wooden items or kitchen knives or sterling silver or crystal glasses. No cast iron never ever.
