I'm just venting.... My shaital ripped and I found a nice shaital I like for 500 dollars and I just can't get myself to buy it because we barely make it for the basics..... Like food etc ..

And by us we only wear shaitals. No leaving the house with a mitpachat. I feel so frustrated that such a small purchase fills me with so much guilt...

I know this is the stupidest problem in comparison to the world but.... Still hurts when I think about it...

$500 is definitely a good price unless you can fix the ripped one for $40.
Is the ripped shaitel very old? If it is then you deserve a new one.

Does your city have a gemach? I got a sheitel last winter for $50 at a gemach and its great. You can get one every three years.

If you live in Lakewood I saw a gently used shaitel sale that includes the cut.

No need to feel guilt or stupid! You're trying to do a mizvah. If your ripped one can't be fixed I would definitely buy the $500 one. If you think about what some people are spending on them these days, between 3,000 -$10,000 it makes your 500 seem like nothing and if you like it that's the most important thing. Buy it and enjoy it happily

I know this is not a popular thing to do in the frum world, but…

Buy from a non-Jewish place. Ethnic wig shops have really nice human hair wigs for a fraction of the cost of a frum one. Yes, you may spend more on alterations, but you may not. I have bought a few human hair wigs from Amazon. I never recut them, I cut my own lace, and I put in an elastic strap to keep it snug. I don’t care about how neat the stitching is on the underside as long as the wig looks good. The lace was too dark, so I used light foundation on the underside. These are really easy cheap fixes. I never spent over $125 total per wig, spent under$100 on some. I got plenty of compliments, they really are nice. I washed and styled them myself.

There is pressure to spend way too much on these things in the frum world. Look around, you’ll likely find something nice.

I asked my rav about that years ago. He said this was an issue visited 20 beforehand and was found to be a non-issue. No need for a hechsher, according to him. He read me the source, actually, but I can’t quote it at you years later.

Regardless of that, some of mine are Brazilian hair. Look around.

I just found this in 30 seconds: brazilian hair, under $100. Just an example.
