It's winter time. But keep in mind South African winters are not real winters (no real negative temps/ snow etc.) and you most likely will be fine with a heavy sweater or light spring jacket at the most. You can also layer some clothes in case certain times of the day are warmer. Just at night the homes are colder since no insulation so make sure to pack a bit warmer. It can depend where in South Africa too. I.e. Cape town to me is a bit colder than Joburg.
Also, just be careful involving safety. It is a very dangerous country. They also have lots of blackouts so keep flashlights and individual chargers etc... handy.
