I heard a very bittersweet story over Shabbos. Our friend, Eli, was one of our guests. Eli's mother is a Shoah survivor, and she lost everything, her family, her home, all her belongings and keepsakes. No photographs of her family survived the war.
A few months ago, Eli was robbed at gunpoint, and the police called in a sketch artist to get a picture of the perpetrator. When the sketch was finished, Eli was amazed at its accuracy and said how nice it would be if this could be a service provided for people who lost all their family photos in wars or other disasters. He mentioned his mother in passing.
A couple of weeks ago, he received a call from the sketch artist who said he'd been thinking about what Eli said about his mother and was wondering if he might try to sketch Eli's grandmother from his mother's description. Eli's mother was skeptical and resistant at first, but Eli convinced her to give it a try.
They sat down together and went over the details of the sketch again and again. Periodically through the process the sketch artist would show her the picture, and she could correct him- "no, her nose wasn't so long," or "her eyebrows were a little thinner," etc. After many, many little changes, he showed her again, and she burst into tears, saying "that's my mother."
I think it's so sad and yet so beautiful that, after all these years (I think Eli said they last saw each other in 1942), she once again can see her mother's face. They've made arrangements for the sketch artist to draw other people in her family as well.

Beautiful idea! I know a [gentile] sketch artist who might want to do this on the side for some extra cash. Anybody?

No, this sketch artist lives in the Chicago area, but you might contact people in NY to see if they might be interested in helping people in similar situations.
