I want to kick what'sapp off the phone and only use it on the tablet or ipad.. Problem is its only asking me to link the device, meaning the original account has to be on my phone. That defeats the purpose.
Any way around this?

I use hubs old phone to link my device. It’s put away in my drawer and only use it when WhatsApp asks again to link a device. Which is about every 10-14 days.

so once in 2 weeks you have to re link it. Bit of a pain.
but back to the orginal question, you're still keeping it on the phone so it doesn't answer that part.

there are other whatsapp app "web" that it can work thru.
But again, the original needs to be on the phone to be linked, so the original question remains

There are ways to do it.
Is it an apple iPad or Android?
You may have to put on a simulator like bluestacks.
Many Israelis do it on their computers with their kosher number that doesn't even have text. It doesn't need reconnecting biweekly if it's as the main account.
Just remember to update all your WhatsApp chat history on your phone before signing in.

I have WhatsApp on a tablet and don't have a smartphone.
When it asked for a phone number, I entered my regular cell number manually. Then I entered the code from the text on the next screen.
Maybe something like that would work for you?

Interesting that you were able to do that without whatsapp automatically sending you a barcode to link to smartphone (original device)
Maybe ur tablet has a sim card? Meaning ur paying for data?
Cuz I think a wifi only tablet can't take a phone number. Is urs android or apple?Apple?
Edited to add- yes this wud be great for me, but I wonder about the above questions- the answers may help me solve this

Definitely not paying for data. It's a cheap android I bought for like $15 on eBay.
It showed a barcode at first but there was small print that says something like "try another way" or "text me a code"
