Does anyone know him/his family? Just curious. I’m surprised this information isn’t more widespread. Sounds like his appeal was rejected, therefore facing imminent execution. Just awful.

He wasn't freed, there was just no one with the authority to sign the death warrant. The new president will have that authority, or they could appoint an interim at any time.
