My dd is upset because her good friend hasn't been acting so nice. When it's just the two of them, it's fine, but when another little girl (a neighbor) joins in their play, dd's friend starts whispering secrets to the other girl and running away from my dd. I told dd that if it happens again, she should tell the friend "I don't want to play with you right now, because you're not acting nice," and come inside right away. We talked about how kids who don't treat their friends well end up not having friends to play with. And I told her that Mommy does not let her play with anyone who's acting mean. We practiced what she could say, and she seemed comforted and went to sleep, but I'm just wondering if there was anything else I could tell her next time this happens? I know this is normal behavior and I have to give her the best tools to handle these situations.

Darling, all my kid shave this, it’s not age specific. The kids just get meaner. Sadly, my dh is a lot better with giving advice than me, so I let him sort out relationship woes, the kids find him more comforting in that aspect. The only downside to that is that he sometimes gets so enraged, he barges out the door, smoke coming from his ears, and yells at those mean kids all on his own. Eeeeeeow.
