I could never understand why we say “happy Memorial Day”
In Israel they don’t say Yom hazikaron sameach!

What is everyone supposed to be doing on memorial day exactly?

Watching local parades and saluting the people marching in them: Veterans and current members of the American Armed Forces . Watching the President placing a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Taking a few minutes out to mentally thank all those who fell in battle to ensure that we could continue to enjoy the liberties that we have.

In the astronomical sense, yes. In the social sense, it's Memorial Day. In an earlier age, it was the first day you could wear white shoes and other accessories with full social approval. (Labor Day being the last day, and the official end of summer from a social standpoint.) It is also the day that public beaches and swimming pools traditionally open all along the Eastern Seaboard from Virginia to Massachusetts, although most actually opened on the Saturday of the holiday weekend.

Anyone else have a family member that served in the US military?

My grandfather served in WWI but BH he wasn’t sent overseas.

A family member (in law) born in Korea because his father was a chaplain in Korea.

My bil is a vet, BH he's still alive. The day to salute him for his service is Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, November 11.
A number of men in my neighborhood served during WWII, but as you can imagine, their numbers are dwindling fast. A distant relative was a WWII pilot who was never found after his plane was shot down, and my fil served during the Korean War.

Same. I'm sure Memorial Day was meaningful to them and their contemporaries, having lost friends in the war. But that was a long time ago, and both my grandfathers are no longer alive. I don't personally know anyone who died in the US military.

You're right, it's gross.

Underlying question though is why is it a day off in the first place. You can go to work while remembering the fallen. Have a few moments of silence and maybe a fundraiser for a relevant charity at work, or whatever you do to honor a memory.

Once you call it a work holiday then of course people are going to take the opportunity to vacation, shop, etc - we don't get enough time off work in general plus what are you actually going to do, sit at home in the dark thinking about soldiers' sacrifices ALL DAY?

So yes I have questions
