For a year already he’s been leaking urine every day. I think it’s behavioral because he’s always holding it in and then runnng at the last second. He gets busy with whatever it is and just hold it in. I don’t think he’s constipated because he goes regularly. I even incentivized him with something he really wants and it hasn’t improved.

Any tips for dealing with this?

Sorry but I would try to get an abdominal x ray. My child was having wet accidents and seemed to be going regularly but dr recommended we treat for constipation. I wanted to make sure so got an abdominal x ray and he was moderately constipated- so not mild but not severe. And I did not know at all.

He's on a small dose of miralax every day. I'm not thrilled about him being on miralax but it's me doing my hishtadlus and listening to the doctors who recommend that he stay on it for now. When he goes off it, he gets constipated. And yes, it got 95-98% better. Definitely helped. Would love a more natural option to treat the constipation, but for now this is where we are at.

eta this is why an x ray was so important for me, because I didn't really want him on meds but when I saw this was clearly an issue, I couldn't just ignore it

Pelvic floor therapy

There is loads you can do for constipation before resorting to miralax which is neurotoxic

It’s usually constipation in boys. They don’t sit long enough to empty fully. Have him sit on the toilet for 15 minutes every day after supper. Give him a tablet or books or something to keep him there. He has to sit every day.

Usually it’s bad peeing habits turn into loose bladder. Bladder exercises include taking him to the bathroom every hour that he’s awake, including during school. No buts. And stand over him as long as he actually pushed himself to try to pee. Hire someone in school to see to it during school time.

People make you crazy about constipation and other issues, but 99% of the time it’s the above.

Good luck.

According to urologists bladder issues are uncommon and constipation is super common. Where do you get numbers from?

From my children’s pediatrician who’s been seeing children for decades.

That’s nice and lovely. But I think I’ll go with the data from urologists. Two I went to said that hardly see bladder issues at this age in regard to leaking. It’s constipation 99% of the time. Forcing your kid to pee every hour is not healthy or fixing the real issue or the cause.

Hire someone to watch my six year old go to the bathroom?!!!??? Anyone else weirded out?
I’d start with a urologist. Pediatric urologist. Pediatricians are great but they aren’t experts in any one area. Specialists exist for a reason.
