It's time to have a little flashlight on every key chain in the family, children included.

Where do you live, and what are you afraid of?

I am reading the news.

It is NEVER imprudent or stupid to have some preparations for unpleasant things such as power outages.

Blackouts happen. Stuff happens.

Oooh I’m the expert.

1. Flashlights: both kinds. The kind that runs on batteries and the kind that can be charged.

2. Headset flashlight, like the kind that miners wear. There were a few months in Kyiv when it was a very important bathroom accessory.

3. Inverters. Generators are smelly, noisy, and you need a space for them to run outdoors.

4. Candles. Nice scented ones. Makes a difference.

5. Drinking water.

6. Snacks. Hopefully you won’t end up eating all your coconut macaroons before Pesach.

No, of course not! But I've had blackouts in the past, and have always found ordinary flashlights and candles to be adequate.

Sure.

But it is good to have a little one on the key chain, because if a blackout comes when you are not home, and it is night, you need that little one to find those other things. It is a small thing but it can make a huge difference, and you can always find it by feel. It's right on your keys.

Small children really appreciate Mom's key chain flashlight. They don't like dark.

As for solar lanterns and chargers, if the blackout lasts for a while, you will be prepared, because the sun will come up, even if your batteries are dead and you are out of candles. Candles get used up fast.

Emergency night lights that you plug into the outlet and that go on if the power is interrupted, are great things. They mean nobody hurts himself lurching around the house in the dark. Their light is not much but it is enough to not bump into things. They last an hour.

They are especially good on or near stairs.

An hour is enough to get everybody into bed, a safer place to be in a blackout.

They recharge when the power comes back on. They are not solar.
