My mothers grandmother name was Hodel.I never knew where the name came from.
This takes the cake though : I had a sister (she was nifteres when I was a baby ) whose name was Dina Hinka Beryl. They called her Dina, but I am very curious about the other names. I have a feeling that my parents didn't know anything about the origins of those names, their parents just asked them to use them, and they did.
I once knew someone named "Alteah (pronounced All-tee-ah) . Ahead was named after someone named Alter.

I have a good friend named Chanina. I don't know if there's more than one.
The boys name is חנינא.
My friend's parents wanted an alternative to Chana.

18 pages of names and my middle name is not here. I never met anyone with my middle Hebrew (probably Yiddish) name except cousins. My father insisted that I have a very common biblical first name.

They probably weren’t familiar with the name.
I know this is an unpopular opinion but I think it’s a good idea for parents to speak with someone before giving a name. There’s a trend to make up names and not use the old ones. That sometimes doesn’t work out well when the parents aren’t familiar with the Hebrew language or Jewish history. These parents might never have heard of Chanina Ben Dosa and thought what a cute name they gave their baby daughter.

I kinda agree. The parents should 100% pick the name, but they should run it by a knowledgeable Rav before giving it.
It's not his place (IMO according to my community) to say "nah, you shouldn't name one daughter Rachel when you already have a Leah", but just to point out who Rachel and Leah were, and let the parents decide. BTW this example I think is fine, just using it because we're all familar with Rachel and Leah.

There are some names that are used for both boys and girls -
Simcha Zisel comes to mind. Both Simcha and Zisel are popular girls names.
Or Yonah.
I'm sure there are more.
