I love uncommon names in Tanach ❤️. When I was around 10 years old, I wished I could change my name. Now I love how unique it is. I’m definitely more memorable for it Smile .

My kids in Israel met a young man whose name was Odeh LaEl. That one was really unusual to me, but it also made me think of the mother who birthed him and was so thrilled with her beautiful baby boy that she named him so. I wouldn't choose it, but I find it sweet and loving.

My aunt is known as babsy, although her name is Mattel. No idea where that came from!
I also know a netty and Gina, never heard anyone else with those names.

I don't think Bruria is so uncommon. I can think of 4 I know off the top of my head. It's actually one of my favorite names.
To the poster who wants to name Manoach - I don't know anyone with that name, possibly because according to most meforshim I think Shimshon's mother was a big tzadeikes but his father was a bit of an am ha'aretz.

Did not read through the whole thread, but I know a boy named Yitra'am (Yisra'am). In Tanach, he was the son of Dovid HaMelech and Michal.

Manoach was far from an Am Haaretz, but his wife was definitely greater in tziddkus.

Tzipor (for a boy)
Rishona (girl)
Zemira (girl)

But I would imagine these names are not so uncommon in Israel.

I actually just looked it up.
(Shmuel Beis 3:5)

Rashi:
This refers to Michal who was cherished by him. Similarly it says "If you had not plowed with my calf" (Shoftim 14, 18). [But] it is written, "And Michal, the daughter of Shaul had no child until the day of her death" (Below, 6, 23) she didn't have one until the day of her death? From that incident and on [she had no children], but prior to that incident she did have [children].

While I agree that some names are cruel to give, (regardless of language) but I don't agree with the second part of your comment. Many of us do not look at our "Yiddish Shtetl" pasts as something to be ashamed of and/or erased and hidden. Rather, we are proud of our rich heritage and mesorah and want to honor our ancestors for their mesiras nefesh and holding on to their emunah and yiddishkeit.

I didn’t mean it’s something to be ashamed of. I just think mesotah wise we should stick to biblical names.

It’s not just about Shtetl, I know Syrians who are called Jamila or Reina. Personally, I stick to biblical names, because that’s the true Mama Loshon. Not Yiddish or Arabic. But that’s my unpopular opinion.
