An earthquake in NY. Now when did something like this happen last??

Around august or September 2011 there was something in NY. Don’t remember if anything in between

Technically it was in NJ ,(west of N. Plainfield) they just decided to rattle us.

A few years ago there was one mid afternoon but not as bad.

They say it’s only dangerous when the magnitude is over 5. This one was 4.8. BH no serious damages reported yet!

Of course there are drills for just we don't live in an earthquake area so we don't ever practice them.

Anyone out there from California who can help us out know what to do?

No reason to freak out. It wasn’t a huge one. I’m sure everyone’s kids are just fine in school.

In the future: don’t run outside. It’s best to stay where you are and take cover under a sturdy table or in a doorway. If you’re outside, stay away from buildings and power lines.

Found this about earthquakes related to eclipse. Something to do with tidal stresses caused by moon.

Dh says there might be another one coming. Aftershock.

Aftershocks are generally much smaller and not always felt.

The biggest danger is what if this was a foreshock and a bigger one is coming? According to x, which is not a very reliable source, there’s a 1/15 chance.

USgs.gov says 6% chance.

I just came to New York, and I’m literally shaking. I thought a truck was stuck or the neighbors were doing some construction work.. and ppl outside are out and about.. I just have this nagging feeling also that won’t budge.. I’ve had it since 530 this morning when my husband went to shul.. please don’t throw tomatoes at me, I’m just scared..

Is there any way to determine if this was a foreshock?

As a Los Angelano who has lived through much stronger earthquakes, the current best advice is to stay in your home.

If you have time (which I never do) theoretically go under a table to protect you from items falling.

New York is not an earthquake prone area because of the nature of the geology. Even in Los Angeles which is geologically subject to earthquakes a lot of how an earthquake is experienced will depend on the specific nature of the ground you are on.

Since New York is not an earthquake prone area - with due respect 4.8 is really a very low figure and to my recollection there has never been an earthquake that caused any kind of damage in the North East area - again because of the nature of the geology and the tectonic plates.

If you do live in an earthquake area, then there are reasonable precautions to take. For example I don't have a heavy picture or mirror above my head board and any valuable tchotchkes have museum wax so they aren't easily dislodged. Also heavy bureaus and dressers are attached to the wall so they don't topple over.

Anyone got Whatsapp msges about Mekubal Rebbeinu Tzvi writing in Peri Netzach about an earthquake followed by an eclipse, which is signaling Gog uMagog era, with Persia attacking Eretz Yisroel.
Why do these revelations appear only after the fact?

Saw two more already.
Someone Sruly Shein said that per Rabbeinu Chanan, earthquakes in Judaism mean Hashem is frustrated with how world nations treat Jews.
A Gemara excerpt (don't know which Gemara) talking about Rav Ketina and a bone necromancer (witchcrafter).
