interesting thread... I grew up traditional (not frum) and I only ever knew about using parsley. I thought that was what everyone used. Why is this? Is it considered something done by less frum? Because now the people I've seen use parsley are the non frum people and the frum kids my kids are friends with haven't even heard of using parsley.

I'm totally speculating but wasn't parsley the picture/example in the Maxwell House Haggadah.

I'm FFB and we always used potato and parsley together when I was growing up.

But what does that have to do with being ffb or traditional?
We are a ffb family. We had those hagadas too.

Oh absolutely nothing. I just wondered if either it was so popular that it was the default in the Maxwell house or Maxwell House put it in there and therefore it became the default.

People use radish? I've never heard that before.

We do parsley, potato, and celery.

We do celeriac (celery root). I'm guessing because we don't eat peels and therefore no celery so we use the rotor instead.

We use onion - Chabad.
Never heard of carrots and radish. Chabad doesn't use radish on Pesach.

Grew up with potatoes (yum!)
Now radishes as that's what DH family does.

I never heard of onion being used. How do you do that? You each get a slice of raw onion? a chunk? I can't imagine eating raw onion aside from in salads or sandwiches? Doesn't it burn your throat?
Also, I never heard anyone using parsely.

I also grew up using cucumbers! I don’t think it was a specific minhag, just the vegetable we chose.

DH grew up with potatoes. But my kids really like the cucumbers so we end up using that, too.

This. We use potato and onion together. (Something to do with the sheila of making ha'adama on raw onion.)

Didn’t know that’s a Sheila. We do both because it’s minhag and everyone takes what they like.

Because an FFB will have mesorah/tradition too and know what their parents did too not just from the pictures in the Hagadah.
Someone not frum in those days didn't have much else to base it off of.

My kids love raw onion!

One gem from our family lore: When my oldest was 1.5, I was cutting up the onions for karpas and he was whining and reaching out. I kept telling him no, this isn't yummy, but finally I got annoyed enough to hand him a piece, fully expecting him to spit it out on the floor.

He chewed, swallowed, and reached out his hand for another piece.

(I despise onions. I boil a potato just for me.)

I grew up using celery but switched to radish after getting married.

How about marror? My family always used a mix of horseradish and romaine. My DH's family horseradish and endive.
